It has been a great honor to be selected to participate in the Leadership Academy program at the Columbus Realtors®. I have gradually begun to understand the depth of this Association and its meaning. Prior to my experience with Leadership Academy, I had a hard time believing that people checked the company hats at the door when they entered the Columbus Realtors®’ doors.
Being part of that Generation X/Y persuasion, I keep a healthy skepticism in place, hoping that brokerage politics doesn’t outweigh the betterment of the Central Ohio Real Estate industry as a whole. There is hope from the brief conversations that I have had with fellow classmates in a direction that I think will continue the vitality and health of the Central Ohio Real Estate industry. There are leaders out there among the Columbus Realtor® community that think about the Real Estate industry as a whole and not what is an immediate benefit to their brokerage… Wow, I’m floored.
It is the thinking of the consumer/client experience that will enable our Columbus Realtors® Association to thrive, drive, and survive in any future scenario. We happen to be gatekeepers of really powerful information; data that we currently give away to entities that seemingly are out to tear us down and destroy the industry.
Hope for change that will mean a better future? A strong Real Estate community? Elevated consumer and client service? Is this too much to hope for or too large a dream? I hope not.
Also, I was asked this question several times today (paraphrasing): “So the internet has given the consumer the advantage, why in the world would they use you?” Great question. Consumers, through the internet have vast amount of data at their disposal to make decisions, much more than 5, 10, 20 years ago. Why in the world would they ever need a Real Estate agent?
Experience. Day in and day out the collective experience that we have as Realtors® is enormous. There is never a dull moment in Real Estate and EVERY transaction is different. Every single one of them is different with their own set of challenges and issues to resolve. As Realtors® gain experience in Real Estate, they are able to adapt to situations with the cumulative knowledge of their collective experiences. If they don’t have those cumulative experiences they can draw on the support system of the brokerage. Therein lies a wealth of information that is at the tip of every Real Estate agent’s finger who can either type an email or pick up the phone.
I pose the question back: “Why in the world would you use the internet to negotiate as complex a situation as a Real Estate transaction? What experience can the internet provide you to prepare you for the emotional and business battle on which you are about to embark?” Everyone needs consultation on handling complex situations to see them safely to the end. There is no other purchase that comes close to the level of complexity and to the study of human behavior than a Real Estate transaction. Do you feel prepared to take it on by yourself?
